Bad Company

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15: 33 Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

Observation: It’s so easy in this world to fall under peer pressure or try to impress someone else. The people you surround yourself with will either corrupt you or help keep you on the right path. I’ve seen this in my life and especially the life of my son. He surrounded himself at one time with gang members and that is what he became. The people at my work are nice but not Christians. I can get into a conversation that can compromise my thoughts and speech if I’m not careful.

Application: I can’t avoid the world and I’m not supposed to. But I can make a better effort to spend more time around my brothers and sisters in Christ to help strengthen me and build up my character.

Prayer: My Lord may I use my time more wisely meeting with my Christian friends in Bible study, dinner and fellowship.

Using My Gift for the Church

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 14: [12] So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

Observation: God has given me talents and gifts to use for God’s glory. I’m called to use them at work and at home, but most importantly to use them at church to strengthen the body of Christ.

Application: I can use my cooking abilities, my planning gifts to help organize special events, help with children ministries, small groups and outreach ministries. It’s time to ask God what He wants me to do. I’m at a crossroad in my life, we have the financial ability to buy a home or take a lower paying job that will give me more time to serve God.

Prayer: My Lord you have created me and continue to form me into this man you desire. Guide me in what to do and use these gifts you have given me to honor you.

Faith, Hope & Love

Scripture: I Corinthians 13: 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Observation: I see this verse and I realize how little of these I have. I want great faith and to trust in God, but I fall short in my actions and thoughts. I worry each day and try to figure out what’s going to happen that it ruins my day. My thoughts are so consumed with worry I don’t express love. Without faith and hope it is imposable to show love.

Application: I need to give each day to God and trust in Him. Each day doesn’t have to be perfect or even go well, but I need to trust God that I’m in His plan. Once I know I’m doing what God wants my focus will be love.

Prayer: My Lord take the worries from my mind and fill me with the Holy Spirit that I may love unconditionally.

I’m Part of the Body

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12: 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

Observation: I get so involved in my life sometimes I feel alone because of that focus. God said it wasn’t good that we are alone. I’m something much more than a man, I’m part of something so special that there is nothing more important on this earth. I’m part of the body of Christ. I need to focus on my part of the body and do it to the best of my ability.

Application: Stop being so self-centered and start getting more involved with my church. Helping make the church stronger.

Prayer: My Lord show me my part in our church so that I may glorify you.

Setting a Good Example

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11: [1] Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

Observation: I wonder what example I set to others. I was talking with my boss the other day and he told me he has seen a difference in me over the last few years. He told me I seem more patient and the people around me enjoy working with me. My desire should always be the same, to fulfill the purpose God has given me.

Application: I need to be that example to others that they would see I belong to Christ. I should be more aware of my actions and how they appear to others. I need to be consistent in being a good Christian.

Prayer: My Lord show me how to become more like your son. Draw me near that others may see Jesus in me.

God Won’t Let Temptation

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10: [13] No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Observation: So often I’m tempted and I feel it’s beyond what I can handle as I try to handle it myself. It’s only when I ask for God’s help that the temptation doesn’t seem overwhelming. Then God provides an escape for me.

Application: Realize I’m not alone when I feel under pressure or tempted. God is right beside me and all I have to do is ask Him to guide me out.

Prayer: My Lord open my eyes to the temptations of this life and guide me through them.

Qualifying for the Prize

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 9: [27] No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Observation: We can be disqualified for the prize. I feel the prize is God’s best for us but it does come with a price. Faith without works is dead being of itself. Accepting Jesus is the first step of our Christian walk. I’m here to bring others to Christ and serve my God by serving others, a slave to my Lord and Master.

Application: My body is not my own it belongs to God and I need to start using it for Him. My focus needs to be on the prize, not things of this world, but fulfilling my purpose and glorifying God.

Prayer: My Lord may I run the race each day drawing nearer to you and may I qualify for the prize.
